If you're riding in winter, full mudguards are a necessary evil, not only do they protect yourself from dirt & freezing water, but they also protect your riding buddies from the same. One open wheeled rider in winter can make a group ride unpleasant for everybody.
It's very easy to fit mudguards if your bike has 'mudguard eyes' fitted to the frame, you should find these close to where your quick releases are attached. If you don't have these there are various full length solutions, I'll see what SolidRock have available and post up here. I can also fit a mudflap to the rear of your mudguards, I've made a pile of these from the best material possible, frijj chocolate milk bottles. A mudflap on your front mudguard should keep your feet free from getting soaked, and a rear will avoid your buddies getting splattered with whatever you might find attached to the road.
